<\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>It Had To Be You, Django<\/h3>\nWhat is there to say, Django Reinhardt? \nYou take forever now to smoke \nThat cigarette on the album cover. \nA perfect swirl of smoke \nRises past your svelte lapel. \nIt all went pretty well that evening, \nEven from here I can tell. \nYou did the gypsy thing \nThe jazz thing, the war thing \nAnd now I\u2019m older than you then \nI still can\u2019t do the guitar thing \nThe way you did with just two fingers.<\/p>\nYour wife made trinkets out of celluloid \nShirt collars, the same stuff they used to use \nFor film and like old pictures always could \nIt can burn. And then it did. \nThe caravan you lived in, \nYou two crazy kids in your teens, \nThe whole thing caught light \nAnd as you saved your wife \nYou lost your hand; or at least some fingers. \nYou thought it would change your life \nAnd it did but not the way \nAnyone might have thought. \nYou were a gypsy jazz musician. \nYou looked like a Jew; \nThat\u2019s what people said in those days. \nSome places they still do but you, \nWhen the Nazis came you got lucky. \nHitler might have detested jazz; \nAnd Heydrich, the Reich Gaulieter of Bohemia \nAnd Moravia wrote the rules but the guys \nWith the boots and the guns, the farm boys \nAnd the doctors, the fliers and the sailors \nListening to Lili Marlene and Bing \nAnd Miller and Dorsey, all of that swing thing \nThey liked that stuff. They were hep to that jive, \nMan. Betty Grable! What a dish! \nThat music swung too, so Django, you didn\u2019t \nWhen nobody would have taken bets on you \nComing out the other side of that war. \nNobody at all. But someone looked after you. \nYou hid in plain view, playing at the Hot Club de Paris, \nNot down some alley off a half-forgotten street \nIn an unfashionable arrondisement. \nNot you. You were still up there with your name \nIn lights same as it was with you and Grapelli, \nBack before; Someone else \nWith a pressing reason to leave Paris fast. \nBut it worked out somehow. \nNobody knocked on your door \nIn the small hours or if they did, \nOnly for friendly reasons \nAnd with some pressing urgency, \nThe way it is sometimes. \nSomeone was looking after you. \nAnd then June \u201944 \nAnd America and electric guitars \nThat you never really liked \nListening to you, it\u2019s plain that\u2019s true. \nThe fluency still there but the sound flat. \nMaybe nobody knew what electric guitars \nWere for back then. Maybe even you. \nTransatlantic meant a week on a ship before \nYou came home again to Soissons-sur-Seine. \nThirty seconds of pain before \nYou put down your guitar for good. \nYou played better with two fingers \nThan most people learn to play in two lifetimes, \nThat sound that people danced to, crooned to, \nSwooned to, the forever sound of golden years. \nIn an imaginary past full of promises \nThat no-one meant to break, but still. \nYou know how it goes. You do now, anyway. \nYou played Limehouse Blues for a place \nWhere now you need a million, \nTo even think about it. That\u2019s blue. \nNagasaki for a somewhere else \nWe don\u2019t like to talk about too much. \nYou told us, back in Nagasaki \nWhere the fellers chew tobaccy \nThe women wiggy waggy woo. And maybe they do. \nSo I\u2019ll see you in my dreams, and in nuages, \nIn a Sentimental Moon, Beyond The Sea, \nIn Echoes Of France with those Swing Guitars, \nSwinging In Springtime. It had to be you. \nDjango. Didn\u2019t it? That and Stephan\u2019s Blues, \nDouble Whisky, Christmas Swing. Just for Fun. \nOubli. Parfum. Swing 39, 41 and 42. \nAll of these your tunes.
